Children are natural, imaginative designers; give them a blank sheet of paper and a box of crayons, and they will create work born purely of their imagination.
WonderTree's educators and programs nurture this design-based, creative thinking by encouraging children to freely choose and design their own learning plan. Using their perceptions of the world around them, children are enabled to follow their naturally inquisitive nature to plan the course of their learning journey.
As children reflect on their learning and build on their unique strengths, their imagination will lead them to create inspirational models of learning for other learners around them. The accumulation of skills such as self-reflection, creative problem-solving and collaboration mean that WonderTree learners are fully equipped to take charge of the design of their own lives, for the greater good of others.
Document: Making an invisible process visible
WonderTree celebrates the children's learning through “share, inquire and inspire” circles, birthday celebrations, a weekly reflection, Learner-Created Exhibitions and Inspired Children Conferences. These are all opportunities for educators to assess and evaluate the children's progress in learning about their community (belonging), themselves (being) and their ability to reflect, imagine, create and inspire (becoming). In this way, when the child's community of co-learners meets to discuss the child, there will be ample documentation to study and reflect upon how the child is achieving self-mastery.
In addition, WonderTree educators use an APP created by our partner organization, LittleLives, to celebrate the children's learning. This tool will enable educators and children to share pictures, voice recordings and videos of the inspired learning within WonderTree classrooms with their community of co-learners.
Using this APP, WonderTree educators will work with children to record their perceptions of the world around them, as they inquire into why and how things are the way they are. As the child reflects on their learning, they will be encouraged to imagine how and why things could and should be improved. Through their natural creativity, children will be able to inspire their learning community with their inspirational stories of their achievements.
This collaboratively created documentation will empower WonderTree learners to share their journey towards self-mastery and, in turn, inspire their co-learners to proactively improve our world.
